Description
Official inquiry into Titanic disaster. White Star Line's RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912 in the North Atlantic during its maiden voyage, and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. An official inquiry was conducted by the US Senate, initially meeting here at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York City. The first day of testimony (19 April 1912) opened with the managing director of White Star Line, and survivor of the sinking, J. Bruce Ismay (1862-1937, centre, hand on mouth) being questioned by senators William A. Smith and Francis G. Newlands. Ismay, vilified by the press, was recalled several times to answer further questions.
